Read Chanelnomics’ blog from Jessica Meek on the Gartner rep – it suggests EMM integration is to be a critical IAM requirement: IoT Set to Drive IAM Implementations. Gartner states, “given integration gaps and market opportunities, IAM leaders can expect EMM and traditional Windows PC management disciplines to move through three waves during the next five to seven years. Will this impact your plans? They go on to say more enterprises could adopt a bring-your-own-identity approach for allowing customers and workforces to use their social identities.
Texas Instruments bulks up and plans to show off in January with building an alternative energy for the Internet of Things. The IoT is nothing without batteries and plugs. But it’s possible to build a sensor network that uses harvested energy that comes from changes in temperature, vibrations, wind and light, as Texas Instruments (TI) will soon demonstrate. But before CES, here’s a good look from Patrick Thibodeau’s article in COMPUTERWORLD about TI’s harvested power.
Internet of Things: What’s the Big Idea? Dassault Systems’ Estelle is sharing from Hong Bai, high-tech Industry Mechatronic System Design Consultant, who delves in to mobility, connectivity and service. Who ties up this perspective neatly in saying “the big idea of IoT is to have connected devices collecting data for analysis, and offer exceptional services based on the result of the analysis, to create unique user experiences. Is this how you see it?
How unsettling might this be … AdAge Chris Pedigo’s The IoT Must be Built on a Foundation of Trust. Earlier this month, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) released its “10 Policy Principles for Unlocking the Potential of the Internet of Things”. The Report touts the enormous potential for a connected world. Unfortunately, it misses the vital point that industry needs to do more to build transparency and choice around data collection. Read what will pave the way to a successful future for the IoT.
Check this out from Chanelle Bessette at TechHive: Jawbone and Big Ass Fans Harness the Internet of Things to Give a Better Night’s Sleep. The appeal of the IoT is more than just being able to control gadgets and home appliances from the cloud. The bigger benefit comes when the devices interact and share info with each other. Catch this recent (Dec 22) joint announcement, case in point, from Jawbone and Big Ass Fans (FYI: few connected devices have attempted this kind of partnership we’re told).
This may take us to a different edge. Steve Baker with Forbes talks ‘Edward Snowden and the Downside to the Industrial Internet of Things. This goes on about how we can structure the Internet to insure anonymity or accountability, but not both. If everything on the Internet could be attributed and tracked back to people, you would have complete accountability. “If you knew the packet you sent would be tagged with the information necessary for someone to track you down, you’d be extremely unlikely to commit any crimes using the Internet.” Does this hit the nail on the head of those ES revelations?
Signing off of 2014 on a light-hearted note (and admitted Trekkie-geek), I couldn’t resist sharing. It also serves as a personal reminder of how the future is advancing at seemingly warp speed (via IoT). This creativity is just simple fun. Make magazine’s Caleb Craft with a “Gingerbread Starship U.S.S. Enterprise”.
Happy Holidays and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
